Small Business: How to Set Up and Organise Your Network Configuration


One of the challenges for a small business is to figure out how they are going to get connected, and what type of connections they are going to need.   1. Assessing Your Needs

Ask yourself some questions before you proceed with setting up your network. For instance:

  • How many computers and other devices do you need?
  • What programs will your employees need to complete work-related tasks?
  • Are you planning on adding a cloud component to the infrastructure?
  • Will you have remote employees? How will they get access to the network?
  1. Making a Plan

When you have figured out some of the issues that pertain to your network, you can start figuring out how to address those needs. For instance, if you are looking to hire remote employees, you will need to set up a VPN so they can access the company network and their files remotely. Another decision you have to make is whether you want to provide each employee’s computer with wired or wireless internet access. Most companies go with wireless as it is more convenient, but wired connections are faster and do provide better security.

Aside from the computers you must buy, there are several other items you will need to get as well. For instance, you will require:

  • Computer Monitors and the relevant cables.
  • Keyboards, mice, headphones and other miscellaneous accessories.
  • Routers if you are going with a wireless connection. Ethernet cables if you are going wired, or as a backup to the wireless network.
  • Servers that are used to set up the network. These are either on your premises or via the cloud.

If there is no one at your company with tech expertise, here is where you most definitely need to hire a professional. Have someone come into your offices to set up everything in the proper way. They can get everyone’s computers hooked up and the operating systems installed, while they can also configure the wireless and/or wired internet connections. Then they will work on your company’s servers, network and internet security mechanism, along with setting up any VPN you may need to provide employees with remote access.

Building a small business network is not the hardest challenge in the world, but it is important that the process is done in the right way. The last thing you want is to find yourself in a position where your network is compromised or easily disconnected because it was not configured properly. And when everything is set up, you can begin to figure out what software can help your employees work in an even more productive manner.
